STORIES

Finding raccoons in the attic too late | Click to Expand

This is a great example of what can happen with undetected animals living in your attic or home. A family of raccoons got into this house's attic and was living there, unnoticed, for quite some time. The weight of the animals' waste (both urine, and feces) built up to the point where the living room ceiling completely collapsed.

The good news is that we were able to completely remediate everything for the homeowners, and it was all covered by insurance. Yet the moral remains: if you hear something odd in your attic, make sure to get it checked out sooner, rather than later.

Raccoons in an employee breakroom | Click to Expand

We provide animal and pest control services to a number of commercial and warehouse locations in the Kansas City area. A huge ecommerce retailer, with several warehouses in our area, called us one day. A raccoon had not just broken into the warehouse (a problem), but had gotten into the employee break room and was eating snacks and preventing employees from using the room (bigger problem).

We quickly responded to the warehouse and found the furry little guy right where they said he was: in the break room by the shelf of snacks. We gently caught him and safely removed him from the warehouse. We also set and monitored a few traps to ensure other raccoons were not getting too close to the warehouse.

Raccoons Are Cute, But Often Carry Disease

Raccoons in our Kansas City area may appear friendly, but they can become aggressive if threatened, mishandled, or cornered. They have sharp teeth and claws and are deceptively strong. But worse than that, raccoons are hosts for some parasites and diseases that very serious to humans.

Raccoons or their droppings (raccoon scat) carry a host of health dangers:

  • Rabies
  • Salmonella
  • Leptospirosis
  • Roundworm

As a homeowner, trying to trap or corner raccoons yourself increases the risk of coming into contact with these serious health hazards. Furthermore, it is illegal in some states for individuals to handle wildlife without a permit or license from the state wildlife agency.

Among wildlife nematodes, raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) is infamous for its ability to cause fatal disease in both humans and wildlife. This parasite infects millions of raccoons in North America.

Raccoon Problems Don’t Get Better on Their Own

Your raccoon problem won’t go away on its own – it takes professional raccoon removal services to get rid of raccoons for good.

Raccoons are a common nuisance animal that can cause extensive damage to homes and property. They often find refuge in attics and sheds or under porches and decks. They have dexterous front paws that they use to pry open garbage cans, tear away siding, and even rip off shingles from the roof of a home. Raccoons also possess sharp claws which they use to climb up walls or dig holes in yards.

Other types of damage caused by raccoons include gnawing on electrical wiring. This can create hazardous conditions that can cause fires or electrical shocks. In attics, these creatures can accumulate enough waste that the ceiling caves in. These busy creatures also dig up gardens, tear apart insulation and furniture, and contaminate water sources with their droppings.
