Woodpeckers usually attack water damaged wood on a home, but not always. The will readily drum on solid siding of a home. The most common misconception is that they are looking for insects. The reality is that they are usually "drumming" on the home to establish their home ranges. This is particularly true in the spring of the year.
Woodpeckers will drum on anything from your siding of your home, to your windows, to your heater exhaust flue on your roof. An immature woodpecker may even want to establish your home in his home range. Most species of woodpecker encountered drumming on man-made structures are Hairy Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers and to a lesser degree is with Northern Flickers and Red-Bellied woodpeckers.
